U14 Girls
EH Tier 1 Quarter Finals vs Reading - 4-1
This was a game of two halves; with a 1-1 score at half time, we really thought a win was possible. However Reading - maybe looking slightly more determined than us - upped their game in the second half, finishing their opportunities in the D with three unanswered goals and the Winchester girls unable to find the back of the net at the other end. Final score 4-1.
U12 Girls - Blacks
vs Guildford A - 2-2
Managing to just about field a team of seven for half-term, away at Guildford, the Blacks (with two Year 6’s making their debut) performed with style and confidence. This was a 50 minute match of three sessions and a high quality game. The Blacks showed penetration down both wing channels, noticeably now being confident to switch play dynamically when progress became too crowded with fast V transfers. Holding intelligent midfield positions between the lines, they created many passing triangles and the dynamism of in-flow receiving was pleasing to watch.
Winchester took the lead and then extended it before being pinned back. Guildford are an able team and created many circle chances themselves with resolute team defending and the keeper holding them at bay. Winchester had probably 60% of play and slightly more chances to score but Guildford had a strong finish and scored at the death to tie the game. With the upcoming Into Hockey Hampshire tournament to prepare for, the coaches finished with a penalty stroke competition that Guildford narrowly won by one. A timely introduction to knock out hockey flicks and the pressure they bring.
U12 Girls - Purples
Surrey Hockey Clubs Tournament - placed 7/13
Playing a Dutch inspired “total hockey” due to no available defenders, Rob Craddock used his coaching guile and influence against the cream of year 6 Surrey clubs. 6 group games saw an even won 3, lost 3 and possibly a new defender identified. The team, growing in confidence won their playoff to finish 7th out of 13, a highly credible performance against large Surrey clubs. Described as an entertaining day all round, the Havant match was especially eventful. Winchester lost 3-2 but hit the post, scored a goal as the umpire blew for a penalty corner and even scored a penalty flick.
