Winchester Hockey Club Oracle Edition 4

The season continues …

It was a quieter weekend for fixtures this week. The only external fixture saw the boys under 16 academy team produce another dominant display by beating local rivals Trojans in their first Home Counties League match. Next weekend sees the first junior section block fixture, a friendly against Havant, with all teams except the under 12 girls in action.

Wednesday evening saw the first dedicated junior goalkeeper training session of the season take place. Run by professional goalkeeping coach, Jez Spicer, players were put through their paces for an exhausting hour and a half. This session will take place every other week, with the next one scheduled for 7th October.

Congratulations this week to Henry Crompton and Joe Jenkinson who made their league debut for the Men’s 1st team. A fantastic experience for 2 of our talented boys under 16 team. Many of our other juniors represented other senior mens and ladies teams on Saturday.

We are always on the look out for interesting content. If you have anything that you would like to include in future editions, please do get in touch.

COVID Regulations Update

Thank you for your co-operation in helping us comply with the England Hockey regulations around COVID.

Please remember that spectators are no longer allowed inside the cages at either Kings or Bar End. Please comply with this and watch from outside the cages, socially distanced, from now on. Note, this currently does not apply to under 8 and under 10 parents who may enter the cage at Kings, as long as they remain on the tarmac strip.

Please make sure that you continue to sign you and/or your child into the Teamo Playsafe register, every time you attend a training session or match, to help us fulfil our track & trace requirements.

Full details of regulations and guidance can be found on the Club website, here.

Team Forghetti under 16 boys train ahead of another dominant performance

27th September: v Trojans

Results: Winchester 6 (Marsh 2, Cooke Coleman, Maclean, Jenkinson) Trojans 0

Another Six Goals on Another Sunny Sunday

For the third Sunday running Team Forghetti U16 Boys scored six goals without reply; or a cloud in the sky.

The pre match plan was to score early.  Dylan Coleman won a short corner in the first minute from which Alfie Marsh duly scored.  The game was even until Milo MacLean crossed for Harry Cooke who lifted it calmly over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 at halftime.

Dylan made it three with a shot from the middle of the D before Milo scored from close range with their goalkeeper on the floor. Joe Jenkinson picked up a cross from Harry Cooke with his back to goal and then pulled off a lovely reverse shot to make it five.

Towards the end, Trojans were getting tired.  Not only did Winchester refuse to concede but Henry Crompton intercepted nicely, allowing Alfie to finish the scoring and maintain the strong start to the season.

Under 14 Boys

The U14 boys had their 2nd internal match in 2 weeks with several different players from last week, as we try to get everyone some full match play. It is a shame some boys aside of those injured (or committed to family arrangements from some while ago) have missed the chance to play in one of these matches, so far.

This week in very warm conditions again, we had another close encounter. My best recollection was that the score was 1-1, but I might be wrong! As last time the match was run in 4 quarters to allow for drinks breaks and players were then able switch around and try out different playing positions.

The first quarter however was best forgotten.. Each team won the ball well and then rushed a pass often giving it straight back to their opposition!  I will put that down to the players getting used to each other. The 3rd quarter was excellent with some scintillating right-wing play creating lots of goal mouth action and great goalkeeping. Well done lads.

Alice Lander (high on the fact she has just completed her level I hockey rules course just before the match) umpired the full match with Tom Shire, who in turn had completed his course some weeks ago. These matches are superb for our young umpires to cut their teeth on and gain the confidence to take on league matches soon. I am sure we will soon run a feature in the newsletter to highlight how all these great young umpire volunteers are getting on.  We also have a large squad of coaching assistants in most of the junior coaching squads in action each week, many combining it with their silver and bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Picture shows the end of the match: for some “a hard, hot day at the office” !

Sponsorship Opportunities

As we look to invest in the coaching programme and resources, we are giving local business an opportunity to sponsor individual teams or the entire junior section.

For a modest contribution, sponsors will have:

  • Their name associated with specific teams

  • Bespoke coverage in newsletters and social media

  • Recognition of their sponsorship in local press coverage

We would very much like to hear from you if you are interested, or have contacts at local business which may be prepared to get involved. Please do get in touch.

The Junior Committee

Last week’s comment that positions were going fast wasn’t strictly true! Please contact us if you are able to take on one of our administrative roles.
