2019 - Sunday 28th April - U14 Boys win Mercian League U14 Title
Winchester HC U14 boys squad qualify for the Mercian League Finals - after qualifying from their Mercian League group and then a good 5-0 play-off win over Wallingford HC on 7th April 2019.
The Semi-Final and Final matches were on Sunday 28th April 2019 at Southgate HC in North London, which hosts a superb Clubhouse and balcony overlooking to excellent artificial hockey pitches.
Whilst quietly confident, there was also a degree of nervousness amongst the squad as they commenced their warm up for the semi-final against Canterbury HC. Once the formalities were done, that nervousness was blown away by a fabulous display of attacking hockey, with Winchester 4-0 up within 15 minutes, goals from Wedderburn, Finney, Fernando and Maclean. The boys continued to dominate the game, with Long and Crompton dictating play from deep and goals scorers spread out amongst 8 different players. Final score was an astonishing 10-2.
After a short break to replenish the energy levels, it was on to the Final against Old Loughtonians. After a strong start from the opposition, 2 quick fire goals from Wedderburn settled the boys down, and Winchester then dominated the remainder of the 1st half. A short corner powerfully finished by Lander made it a comfortable 3-0 at half time. Loughtonians improved in the second half, and a few Winchester chances went begging, but the boys comfortably saw out the second half; final score 3-0.
Captain Crompton collected the shield, and the whole squad celebrated the 1st ever Winchester Mercian League win. See Photo.
