Men's 2nd XI in emphatic win

Winchester 2nd XI 7, Gillingham 1st XI 1

The 2nd XI continued the excellent post-Christmas form which has seen them unbeaten since 11th January as they swept aside their Dorset visitors in a high quality display.

Gillingham looked like awkward opponents in the opening exchanges, but Josh Fiske's tap-in from a Stuart Swift cross on four minutes burst that initial bubble. Swift was creator again five minutes later with Henry Crompton finisher at short range. Rob Craddock was next on the scoresheet, diverting Olly Green's fierce drive-in from the 23m line.

Gillingham obviously liked restarts, and for a few minutes were unrecognisable as they lifted their performance levels at the start of the second half and received reward for their efforts to bring the score back to 3-1 from a penalty corner. Keeper Ally Birch's status as first half observer was definitely upgraded and was far busier with a number of god, close range saves. However, calm was restored defensively with Olly Green masterful both in his central defence positon, but also as an attacking springboard on a number of occasions.

Winchester soon rediscovered their goal -scoring mojo with Swift now adding to his endless Winchester goal tally with an accurate shot to the far post. Greg Cox then converted with an unstoppable strike from a penalty corner (pictured). Old boys Cox, Craddock and Swift then interchanged for the latter to register his brace. Crompton scored the final goal of the game for his own brace, to emphasise the contribution that the large U18 element of this team are now making to this team.
