Winchester Hockey Club Oracle Edition 8
Weekend Summary
Helen Jelley is our star feature this week. Thanks to Mia Selman, one of our Anthony Munden Architect under 16 girls, for interviewing Helen. The girls have really enjoyed Helen’s coaching this season and are starting to show real signs of development as a team.
It was a quieter weekend, as most teams took a well earned half term break. Team Forghetti U16 boys did continue their unbeaten season with an entertaining victory against Oxford Hawks to cement their position at the top of their Mercian League. Next weekend they take on a select team from the men’s section, hoping for a stern examination of their credentials.
The U16 boys and girls kick off their EH Cup campaigns with the boys hosting Woking and the girls travelling to local rivals, Trojans. Good luck to both teams for those matches.
Away from the cup games, all other teams play friendlies against Havant.
Please keep the match reports and photos coming and continue to send us lots of interesting content each week for our fantastic Winchester Hockey Oracle. Anything written by the children would be particularly welcome.

COVID Regulation Reminder
Thank you for your continued co-operation in helping us comply with the England Hockey regulations around COVID.
We have seen a number of absentees across the junior section in recent weeks because of a requirement to self isolate. Obviously this is very frustrating but it is crucial that we all abide by the government and England Hockey regulations. A very useful flow chart explaining reporting requirements under various scenarios can be found here.
Please remember that spectators must remain outside of the cages at both home grounds and are expected to follow government social distancing rules at all times - this is to reduce the risk of infection. Note, this currently does not apply to under 8 and under 10 parents who may enter the cage at Kings, as long as they remain on the tarmac strip.
It’s critical that you continue to sign you and/or your child into the Teamo Playsafe register (by using the app or pitch-side QR codes) every time you attend a training session or match, to help us fulfil our track and trace requirements.
Full details of regulations and guidance can be found on the Club website, here.
Are you missing a hooded jumper?
A number of hoodies have been left recently after matches and can be returned at their next coaching session, once we can identify the owners!
If your child has a hoodie now, can you please ensure it does has a surname in it - to ease future returns!
A) New Masuri style, size 13-14 years with initials on front PL
B) New Masuri style, size 13-14 years with initials on front MS
C) Old style to fit 14-15 year old - no name
D) Old style to fit 14-15 year old - no name (left earlier in the year before the March Covid lockdown).
Please contact Richard Macer (richard.macer@btinternet.com) to claim any of the above and it can be passed back to your coaching group Manager to reunite with its owner.
Meet Helen Jelley - Under 16 Girls Coach
Interview by Mia Selman
Helen Jelley has been playing hockey since she was 4 years old, her mum had always played and signed her up too. This season she has taken on the roles of the Ladies 1st Team coach and the U16 girls’ coach.
When asked what her favourite thing about her job was she said: “It will never be boring and I will always have new people to coach and it will be constantly interesting and fun”.
As a coach her expectations of the players are to always work hard, have a good work pace and to always have fun whilst playing hockey. Her own hard work has definitely paid off as she was the captain for the Wales hockey team, and she won the premier league - two of her greatest achievements.
Under 16 Boys
Team forghetti Under 16 academy V Oxford wildcats - Score 8-5
(Goalscorers: Lander (3), Marsh (2), Fernando, Coleman, Wilson)
A heavily depleted Winchester Under 16 A team travelled up the A34 for their first Mercian League game of the season. In the words of Eddie J, the absence of regulars provided an opportunity for the younger guys to show what they can do. And show us they did, with debutantes Shire, Quigley, Kitson and Kilpatrick (the younger), all impressing with their confidence and ability to quickly integrate into this team.
Oxford showed good attacking intent, taking the lead early and following on with some well taken goals.
Fernando, playing his first game of the season, was quickly on the score sheet as the goals rattled in at both ends. Lander’s drag flick was on song, with 3 clinical finishes from penalty corners. Marsh bagged another 2 goals for the team, with Coleman and Wilson completing the scoring.
Sponsorship Opportunities
As we look to invest in the coaching programme and resources, we are giving local business an opportunity to sponsor individual teams or the entire junior section.
For a modest contribution, sponsors will have:
Their name associated with specific teams
Bespoke coverage in newsletters and social media
Recognition of their sponsorship in local press coverage
We would very much like to hear from you if you are interested, or have contacts at local business which may be prepared to get involved. Please do get in touch.
The Junior Committee
Please contact us if you are able to take on one of our administrative roles.
