Winchester Hockey Club Oracle Edition 22
Under 12 Girls
U12 A vs bournemouth and Salisbury - Lost 0-4 and 1-5
Scorer: Emma Latimer
Winchester faced two tough matches against capable and efficient sides this week. The 4–0 and 5-1 losses to Bournemouth and Salisbury respectively were not representative of the commitment and skill put in by the Winchester side. On the attack we looked dangerous but were thwarted all but once by very capable opposition goalies. Emma slotted the goal after a superb piece of team work in building up to the goal from the midfield. Our defence should be commended for an excellent performance.
Winchester displayed some superb play in parts with capable individual performances but this was unfortunately dissected by teams working more consistently as a team for the full 30 minutes. There are some excellent players in the team and our focus looking forward is going to be on building them into an efficient and gelled team, operating as one.
U12 B v Basingstoke and Trojans - drew 3-3 and Won 8-1
The Winchester U12 Girls’ B team faced Basingstoke and Trojans at Trojans Hockey Club. The first match was played against Basingstoke, a challenging side which tested the team. Our first goal was a run up the wing from Venne which she crossed to Sophie leading to a banging finish. It wasn’t long until Basingstoke ran past our defence and scored to bring the score to 1-1. Winchester’s second goal came for a short corner deflection by Ella. After this it was a game of cat and mouse with Basingstoke 3-2 up until the final minute when Sophie scored the equaliser to bring the final score to 3-3.
The second match presented less of a challenge as Winchester mostly kept the Trojans attack pinned back and giving them only had a few chances to score. More chances to score were available to Winchester as our midfield and defence were strong. Great goals were scored by Venne, Sophie and Daisy and the final score ended at 8-1 to Winchester.

WHC host U10s Tournament
On Sunday 10th October, the U10s hosted their first tournament of the season at Kings. Winchester had a fantastic turnout of 34 players in 5 mixed ability teams with Andover fielding 3 teams.
Everyone tried their best and scored lots of goals, with some players playing in their first ever match. A good time was had by all, including the spectators who enjoyed some great hockey with the bonus of some unseasonably warm sunshine!
Sporting Successes away from the Hockey Pitch
Congratulations to two of our Winchester Hockey Club players achieving sporting success in other sports as well as hockey - Finty Trussler, who has been selected into the Southern Vipers women’s cricket squad and Will Fletcher, who was one of eight sailors making up the 2021 Great Britain Development Squad.
All of us at Winchester Hockey wish Finty and Will the best of luck in the coming months…..
Finty Trussler
Finty (U18) was selected into the Southern Vipers women’s cricket squad this summer, with the season finishing with another trophy. Finty has featured in the squad all season, has thoroughly enjoyed it and has gained lots of experience playing with some quality international women cricketers. Hockey will take a bit of a back seat in this current season, as she has just flown off to New Zealand to play a cricket season in Auckland and then flies back in early April for another cricket season at home, hopefully with the Vipers again… so a return to using her hockey skills will have to wait until around this time next year!
Will Fletcher
Will Fletcher (U15) has been experiencing success this year in his other sporting passion, sailing. In the summer he was one of eight sailors making up the 2021 GBR Development Squad and was fortunate to have the opportunity of competing in the Youth Centenary Regatta at Lake Garda in Italy as part of the GBR team. More recently he has been selected as one of the four sailors for the GBR Team to compete in the 33rd Optimist Team Cup taking place at Lake Wannsee in Berlin during the October half term.
