Men's 1st XI vs Basingstoke

This classic six pointer for two local teams struggling at the bottom of the division one premier league swung Basingstoke’s way, giving them the season double. Conceding to Andy Pett (ex Havant) in the first and twelth minutes was the worst of all starts for Winchester.

Control errors, a lack of marking and forced passes caused most of the pain.

Post quarter one, the Winchester central midfield started marking and had a couple of chances without truly threatening.

However Basingstoke scored a third which at half time gave the home side a huge uphill task.

Winchester, while still making basic errors, rallied and created a myriad of second half chances. Many were missed but Jack Holloway scored the first and Adam Major got the yellows within one.

The last thirteen minutes were even and Winchester, having failed to score, conceeded a last minute goal, a classy deflection by Stefan Bonser from a right wing cross.

This was a tough defeat, but Winchester again could take heart from creating enough chances to score five which could have changed the narrative.

With only pride to play for, will Winchester’s A team knuckle down or fold? The last half dozen matches of the season will define character and desire. Next up, Haslemere away.
