Men's 1st XI vs Basingstoke

Winchester Mens 1st XI Pre Season roundup:

Winchester's pre season was brought to an end with a hard fought victory over Basingstoke. Following a good run of pre season fixtures which included a fantastic 3-0 win away at last seasons 3rd place side Bournemouth, Winch were keen to finish the summer on a high.

A dominant display, which should have seen far more than the four goals scored, showed the progress made by the team over the last 7 weeks.

Dan Allen and Ben Anthony each grabbed their respective 3rd goals of pre season to put Winchester 1-0 and then 2-1 up with a scrappy Basingstoke goal falling in between.

Despite their dominance, Winch were pegged back to 2-2 through a bafflinging awarded penalty stroke and were very briefly trailing, after some good football skills from the Basingstoke attackers went unpunished in the D and allowed them to tap home.

Undeterred, Winch won a stroke of their own after Sam Headey's flick was stopped on the line by a Basingstoke body. The skipper then hit the bar with the stroke.

It proved immaterial however as moments later W Vincent produced a classy finish to level the game, and Jonah Graham followed up with a fine solo goal to bring Winchester the victory.

Winchester were proud to feature a number of young players throughout the summer, with some encouraging performances from many of the u18s who have been called upon in the last few weeks.

The Mens 1s host South Berkshire in their first SC Premier Division game of the season next weekend and would love your support.
