Winchester were able to name a near complete squad to face Reading in what proved to be a tightly contested encounter against the reserves of one of England's premier clubs.
The game began evenly, with both sides creating early chances. Reading were first to strike on twelve minutes, capitalising on a Winchester error to launch a swift counter attack and slot the ball past the outstretched Seb Eaton.
Winchester thought they had levelled through George Allmark, but his effort was ruled out. The setback only fired the visitors up, and within a minute Kieran Malloy found the back of the net to make it 1–1.
Reading responded with sustained pressure and regained the lead through a well-executed short corner routine. Winchester, however, refused to back down, and a neat combination between Ben Hibberd and Malloy saw the latter score his second to bring the game level once again before half time.
The second half continued in the same end-to-end fashion. Both teams converted from penalty corners, Reading first, followed by Winchester, with Ben Hibberd striking home with ten minutes left on the clock to secure a well-earned 3–3 draw and end Winchester's sequence of four losses.
